Project overview

In the third year of my study, I worked on a project focused on reducing the risk of falling accidents among the elderly. For this project we got the assignment to develop a concept that stimulates independent exercise.

In this project I’ve conducted user research, strengthened my empathy skills through conversations with our target audience, developed prototypes, as well as managed feedback and incorporated it into our design process. I’ve also learned to work together with a different department, as this project was done in conjunction with programming students.

Walkabout Platform

During this project I've played a major role in developing the final prototype for our concept. In the video you can view a walkthrough of this prototype.

WalkAbout is a platform that allows users to view physical activities - such as walks, in great detail, as well as join group activities. You can also view the prototype yourself with the button below!

Research

01 - Design Process

To kick things off we’ve taken the briefing and outlined our clients expectations, requirements and key deliverables. From there we started mapping out some of the basic information we were aware of and doing a brief literature study.

In this project I’ve followed the double diamond as standard for the design process, making sure to maintain it’s iterative approach to developing our concept. This has helped maintain a clear structure and guarantee the integration of feedback and test results.

02 - Literature Research

In this project I’ve conducted literature research on recommended exercises, motivational factors, and the impact falling accidents can have on the elderly.

These insights helped me prepare for a future field study and ask relevant questions to professionals and our target audience.

03 - Field Study

For my field study I’ve reached out to a wellness organisation and was able to organise and conduct an expert-interview with a movement coordinator and attended their exercise class for the elderly.

This experience has helped me identify key motivational factors, gain a better understanding of what exercises are engaging for our targeted audience as well as understand their core values better.

Define & Ideation

04 - Insights & Idea Generation

The insights from my literature and field research have allowed me to establish various new requirements for our eventual concept to ensure it matches the needs of our targeted audience. I’ve created infographics to list key insights and share them with my team, and helped establish design guidelines.

I've also actively participated in brainstorm sessions, generating ideas quickly using techniques like Crazy-8 sketching, and developing a low-fidelity annotated sketch for a potential direction of the project.

Prototyping

05 - Development

In the prototyping phase I took on several responsibilities, converting wireframe sketches made by team members into an interactive mid-fidelity prototype.

From here I’ve coordinated with team members to set up various tests and integrate feedback from these into our process, and eventually create a high-fidelity fully functional prototype of our concept, WalkAbout.

06 - Final Design Work

Working on this prototype I’ve been responsible for designing various pages and features, such as being able to view events, the walking route description pages, the option to print physical route maps, and more. I’ve also created a mobile mock-up of this prototype.
